Hold Tight Handrails do NOT require structural modifications to the home. Under VHA Directive 1173.1 (Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service Administrative Procedures), DME that does not require structural modifications are purchased directly through a standard CPRS Prosthetics Consult (VA Form 10-2621). Whether a handrail requires a HISA grant or can be purchased directly by the VA Prosthetics Department depends on how it attaches to the home and whether permanent structural alteration is required. Hold Tight Handrails do NOT require such alteration.

Which size should I prescribe?
Hold Tight Handrails come in two sizes: 18" and 32". The shorter handrail is great for a step or two. The longer size is best for two to three steps.
Which mounting style should I prescribe for the veteran?
This depends on the door situation. Our Jamb Mount handrails have an angled mounting bracket designed specifically to fit into the jamb of a door or any corner/angled surface. Our Wall Mount has a flat mounting plate and will mount to any flat surface.

No. Hold Tight Handrails are designed for quick, straightforward installation with basic tools and can typically be installed in under 15 minutes. This can usually be done by the Veteran, a family member, friend or professional if necessary.
