    When the Earthquake Comes

I installed two 18" handrails for a two step transition from the garage into the house using the flush mount handrails. After determining the general location of the centerline of the studs, I cut openings in the sheetrock on either side of the door using an oscillating saw to the stud centerlines. I removed the pieces and installed on each side a 5/4" x 4" piece of wood adjacent to the studs closest to the door. I simply attached the pieces of wood behind the sheetrock and used sheetrock screws to hold them firmly in place. I then replaced the pieces of sheetrock I had removed and finished the area with sheetrock compound and paint. I then attached the handrails using shorter, 2 1/2" construction screws. I felt the screws provided with the handrails were (a) too long and (b) had too long (about 1/2") of an unthreaded shank. By installing via my method and with the shorter screws, the unthreaded shank of the screws would lie in the sheetrock while the threaded portion would be firmly affixed in solid wood. In any event, the handrails are very secure and my wife claims that in the event of an earthquake (an event that is highly unlikely) she will be holding on. The handrails themselves are very nice pieces - too nice for the garage.

    A Sturdy Help

My handhold arrived timely after ordering and was well-packaged. The directions were very clear and easy to follow. I had to return the one I ordered because it was the wall-mounted version and I hadn’t counted on all the obstacles behind my wall. However, the company responded very promptly to my email inquiry and sent a jamb-mounted version. It arrived very promptly and was installed so easily by my son-in-law. I now have something that I can hold on to in going from garage to house and it is a big help that I feel confident in using.
